(original) world: Back in the 1980s, we drilled too deep, looking for oil and other resources. We found an enormous ecosystem full of monstrous alien creatures that seemed to want nothing more than to wipe out all humans. We ALSO found friendlier monsters that would attach themselves to human hosts and give them strange powers allowing them to actually fight back against the more hostile monsters.
Skip ahead to 2015. Kohaku Yuhara's family is caught in a monster attack. Her father's legs were paralyzed, and Kohaku herself would have died had there not been a symbiote wandering around, looking for a human. They prefer humans on the edge of puberty, so Kohaku was a perfect choice. The symbiote burrowed into her spine and kept her alive at the brink of death until the military was able to defeat the beast. She went on to Jr. High at an otherwise all boys school for complicated reasons involving scheduling and scholarships and whatnot. Listen, don't think about it too hard. There's more than enough shows about one guy going to an all girls school. This was when she picked up the habit of presenting as male for convenience.
Skip ahead to 2018 (Which was the near future when I wrote this). Kohaku starts her time at Aegis Monster Hunter Academy, the oldest and among the most prestigious schools in the world dedicated to training Hosts. She was all ready to have a fulfilling and quiet scholastic experience, but any chances of that went up in flames when she ran into Toyo Seiryu. Toyo was the Student Council President at the time, as well as the strongest fighter in the school, known by the student body as "The Dragon". She was also very, very lazy. When she ran into Kohaku, she saw an opportunity. She faked outrage over some minor slight and challenged Kohaku to a duel. Bewildered, Kohaku accidentally accepted. Kohaku didn't realize until Toyo threw the match and lost that the winner would become the new Student Council President. Toyo got to foist a huge pile of responsibilities onto Kohaku's skinny shoulders and live her life of ease. Kohaku, being the serious and responsible sort, did her best to deal with the eccentric personalities of the student council.
As if that wasn't enough, she started noticing something strange going on among the school's faculty. There seemed to be secret, cut off sections of the school no one could get into save for a few teachers. Students were disappearing. SOMETHING was up, and Kohaku didn't have anyone to rely on but her own weird group of friends to figure out what!

abilities: Kohaku is a "host", a bearer of a symbiotic parasite that has burrowed into her body and given her strange powers. There are as many varieties of powers as there are symbiotes. In her case specifically, the symbiote replaced most of her nervous system. It has given her the following advantages:
- Improved reaction times. When Kohaku is focusing on it, the world seems to move in slow motion. It doesn't make her any FASTER, but it does give her a bit longer to figure out what she wants to do in any given situation.
- Improved senses. All of Kohaku's senses are more detailed and accurate than a normal human's. She can see better, hear better, and so forth. But even more than that, there's a sort of mental "dial" for each of her senses, allowing her to tune them up to INSANE sensitivity allowing her to do things like read a book over your shoulder from two blocks away, or to overhear whispered conversations in the next room over (though this obviously also leaves her more vulnerable to sudden bright lights or loud noises). She can also tune them DOWN, so she can shut off her senses if she wants. Useful for ignoring pain, eating spicy food, or tuning out that one song you can't stand.
- Berserker strength. Related to the improved senses. Kohaku doesn't have any more strength than a normal person with her muscle mass, but she CAN briefly surpass her normal limits by shutting off her sense of pain. This gives her a minute or two of seemingly superhuman strength as she ignores all her body's warning signs that she's hurting herself. The cost is that she IS hurting herself, and she usually collapses into a worthless heap for a few days afterwards.
- Symbiotic survival. All hosts have this ability. If Kohaku receives a fatal injury, the symbiote within her will keep her hanging at death's door for LONG after a normal human would succumbed. She'll still be useless during this time, lying on the ground unable to move, and she will EVENTUALLY die, but it takes longer. Basically add like, half an hour, to how long it takes her to bleed to death. Instantly fatal injuries (decapitation, etc) will still kill her just fine.
- Combat training. Not a supernatural ability, per se. Kohaku's sister Ako is possibly the strongest person in her setting, despite being like 15 and not being a host. Ako put her through hell teaching her how to fight, giving Kohaku a solid foundation on hand to hand combat skills, as well as a crippling fear of her own sister.
Others hosts do stuff like breath fire, reverse time, shapeshift, or encase themselves in invulnerable armor. So as symbiotic powers go, Kohaku's are generally considered fairly weak.

strengths: Responsible: Kohaku does her best to not let people who are relying on her down, even if it isn't reasonable for those people to rely on her. She didn't WANT the student council position, and she got it through a scam, but she does her best to do the job. She stumbled upon a sinister conspiracy, and she didn't pass it by. When she's in a position to deal with something that needs dealing with, she will usually buckle down and do it. She might kind of complain about it, but the important thing is that she'll be DOING it while complaining.
Level headed: Kohaku is not given to panic or flights of fancy. She's very present and in the moment. Once she's decided to do something, she doesn't let herself get intimidated or distracted, but just keeps working at it until she succeeds or fails. She will usually be the one to keep a plan grounded in reality, and the one to consider practical details. If a task seems too large to do, she's good at breaking it down into manageable chunks.
Leadership: Despite being forced into it, Kohaku was actually pretty good at the Student Council President job. Though she will deny it to the ends of the Earth, Kohaku has a knack for delegation and decision making. She's also difficult to intimidate, and doesn't take shit from people who try to get out of pulling their own weight or otherwise disrupt a functional team. Most importantly, when she jumps in to do something, others tend to want to follow, either out of inspiration or out of guilt.
●
weaknesses: Petty: While she is normally fairly laid back, Kohaku remembers when people are rude or unpleasant to her, and she is not above being annoying to them entirely out of spite. After being tricked into taking a whole bunch of authority and responsibility by Toyo, she used her new position to schedule noisy events outside of Toyo's room. Nevermind that Toyo could kick her ass six ways to Sunday, it was very important to make sure that the battle of the bands was scheduled during her afternoon nap.
Lack of confidence: Kohaku is capable of amazing things, but she lives surrounded by amazing people. She has a strong tendency to undersell herself and her own abilities. When thrust into making major decisions, she often falls back on the "I'm just a kid" excuse. She's still responsible, and if it comes down to it she'll try her best, but she will also be the first to list her own lack of qualifications when people expect things of her.
I can't think of a short way to say this one but she tends to have trouble with not projecting her own experiences on others. She forgets that other people can't overhear whispered conversations from two rooms away. She gets surprised when people make different decisions than she would have in their position. She knows, intellectually, that her personality and life experiences are unique to her, but unless she's paying attention to it she tends to forget that other people don't necessarily see the world the same way she does.
●
job skills (optional): 4 months as student council president, amateur chef, sword fighting and hand to hand skills.
●
housing (optional): Kohaku values her privacy, and would ask to have a single room if given the option. OOCly, I'm fine with whatever
