CANON INFORMATION

CHARACTER NAME: Kohaku Yuhara
CANON: Original
HISTORY: There is a whole genre of anime in which a handsome but inoffensive boy with super powers of some kind goes to a special school for people with super powers, where he then gets accosted by like 5-6 cute girls who all want to be his girlfriend. Usually, one of them is his little sister and another is the most powerful fighter in the school who loses to him in a duel in the first episode. There's generally something resembling a plot, but it's usually a half hearted mess that takes the back seat to coming up with more and more contrived reasons for our bland protagonist to accidentally grope people or walk in on them naked. I created Kohaku specifically and Aegis Academy in general to make my attempt to create something in this genre while having it not be sexist garbage, so keep this in mind while reading the following.

In the mid 1980s, on an alternate version of Earth, deep oil drilling uncovered a massive network of caves that riddled the crust of the entire world. They were also full of monsters, and they hated us. There were two types of monsters. The kind most people met would just burrow up from the depths and kill as many people as they could before getting taken down. They were all differently shaped, had different abilities, and were all very difficult to kill. Any moment, anywhere on the Earth could become a battleground.

The second kind of monster was less hostile. They were smaller, and almost entirely helpless on their own. But if you brought one of them to a human being in early puberty, it would immediately latch on to them and bond with them, forming a symbiotic link. Anyone who this happened to gained strange powers and mutations in exchange for playing the role of Host. Fire breath, invulnerable scales, time manipulation, shapeshifting...just about anything you could imagine. With the proper training, these Hosts became the single greatest weapon against the creatures emerging from the Deeps.

Skip ahead to 2015. Hosts and Monsters battling across the world is just a fact of life by now. Schools have popped up that focus on teaching superpowered youths how to control their abilities. The oldest, and most famous, is Aegis Monster Hunter Academy, on the outskirts of Tokyo, Japan. But that wasn't interesting to young Kohaku Yuhara. She was having just another ordinary day in her first year of Jr. High. It all went wrong when the ground started shaking. It wasn't an earthquake, of course. It was a monster burrowing up into the middle of the school. It burst forth and started rampaging through the building, knocking most of it down.

In the chaos and violence that followed, Kohaku found herself trapped under some debris. It was then that a symbiote that had come up behind the monsters found Kohaku. It burrowed into her spine and kept her alive until hours later, when the military finally was able to drive the monsters off and rescue the survivors. Kohaku came out with no serious injuries, though her father, who was a teacher at the school, lost the use of his legs. Kohaku's sister Ako, currently 10 years old, had always been a little strange, and she reacted to the monster very differently. She had also been in class, at the elementary school across the street. Ako saw the monster burst forth from the ground and while everyone else ran screaming, Ako's first thought was "I want to fight it."

Over the following three years, Kohaku's life changed dramatically. She went to therapy to deal with the trauma of simultaneously spending several hours trapped under a block of cement while monsters fought all around her AND having a living thing burrow into her spine while she was still conscious to feel it. Since her school had been destroyed, she, along with the rest of the surviving students, were sent to continue their education at other nearby jr. high schools. Kohaku insisted on going to the school her therapist worked at, despite it being an all boys school. She took to dressing in boys' clothes and generally acting less feminine, which was enough to stop her from getting hassled too badly, especially when combined with the fact that she had superhuman powers now.

Kohaku started learning to control her new powers from the most unlikely of people: Her little sister. Ako was...probably insane, to be honest, but her encounter with the monster had awoken a thirst for battle that could not be quenched. Ako reached ever greater heights of skill and strength despite not being a Host herself, and taught Kohaku how to fight.

2018. Kohaku got good enough grades that, combined with her status as a host, allowed her to get into Aegis Monster Hunters Academy. On her first day, she met Toyo Seiryu. Within minutes of meeting Kohaku, Toyo had come up with several reasons to dislike her, and eventually challenged her to a duel in the training ring. Kohaku, confused but convinced that she hadn't done anything wrong, accepted. This was when she found out that Toyo was the student council president of Aegis, and widly regarded as the most powerful fighter in the school.

Despite this, Kohaku managed to win the fight. It was only in the last second that she realized it was because Toyo was intentionally not trying. Kohaku was declared the winner, and then informed that because this was a school dedicated not just to academic pursuit, but also to creating deadly fighters, defeating the student council president in a duel meant you get their position. No take backs. Toyo was secretly an intensely lazy person, and had been looking for some poor schmuck to pass the job off to.

And so we reach the meat of our story. Kohaku, unexpectedly shoved into the position of Student Council President on her first day of school, does her best to balance dealing with the eccentric personalities of the student council with keeping up with her school work.

From here, the rest of the story was going to be a PSL so we only had a vague outline of events to come, but it went something like this:

- Kohaku is tormented by the various insane members of the student council, some of who think she is a boy and want to date her
- There is some kind of school wide martial arts tournament and everyone gets to have sick fight scenes
- The student council discovers a conspiracy amongst the school faculty involving illicit medical research about how to graft symbiotes onto adults, or how to give one person multiple symbiotes, or how to make artificial symbiotes. You know. Mad scientist stuff.
- It is discovered that a race of super mysterious badguys from underground are pulling the strings
- Exciting climax of some kind!

STRENGTHS: Responsible: Kohaku does her best to not let people who are relying on her down, even if it isn't reasonable for those people to rely on her. She didn't WANT the student council position, and she got it through a scam, but she does her best to do the job. She stumbled upon a sinister conspiracy, and she didn't pass it by. When she's in a position to deal with something that needs dealing with, she will usually buckle down and do it. She might kind of complain about it, but the important thing is that she'll be DOING it while complaining.
Level headed: Kohaku is not given to panic or flights of fancy. She's very present and in the moment. Once she's decided to do something, she doesn't let herself get intimidated or distracted, but just keeps working at it until she succeeds or fails. She will usually be the one to keep a plan grounded in reality, and the one to consider practical details. If a task seems too large to do, she's good at breaking it down into manageable chunks.
Leadership: Despite being forced into it, Kohaku was actually pretty good at the Student Council President job. Though she will deny it to the ends of the Earth, Kohaku has a knack for delegation and decision making. She's also difficult to intimidate, and doesn't take shit from people who try to get out of pulling their own weight or otherwise disrupt a functional team. Most importantly, when she jumps in to do something, others tend to want to follow, either out of inspiration or out of guilt.
FLAWS: Petty: While she is normally fairly laid back, Kohaku remembers when people are rude or unpleasant to her, and she is not above being annoying to them entirely out of spite. After being tricked into taking a whole bunch of authority and responsibility by Toyo, she used her new position to schedule noisy events outside of Toyo's room. Nevermind that Toyo could kick her ass six ways to Sunday, it was very important to make sure that the battle of the bands was scheduled during her afternoon nap.
Lack of confidence: Kohaku is capable of amazing things, but she lives surrounded by amazing people. She has a strong tendency to undersell herself and her own abilities. When thrust into making major decisions, she often falls back on the "I'm just a kid" excuse. She's still responsible, and if it comes down to it she'll try her best, but she will also be the first to list her own lack of qualifications when people expect things of her.
I can't think of a short way to say this one but she tends to have trouble with not projecting her own experiences on others. She forgets that other people can't overhear whispered conversations from two rooms away. She gets surprised when people make different decisions than she would have in their position. She knows, intellectually, that her personality and life experiences are unique to her, but unless she's paying attention to it she tends to forget that other people don't necessarily see the world the same way she does.

CANON ABILITIES: Kohaku is a "host", a bearer of a symbiotic parasite that has burrowed into her body and given her strange powers. There are as many varieties of powers as there are symbiotes. In her case specifically, the symbiote replaced most of her nervous system. It has given her the following advantages:
- Improved reaction times. When Kohaku is focusing on it, the world seems to move in slow motion. It doesn't make her any FASTER, but it does give her a bit longer to figure out what she wants to do in any given situation.
- Improved senses. All of Kohaku's senses are more detailed and accurate than a normal human's. She can see better, hear better, and so forth. But even more than that, there's a sort of mental "dial" for each of her senses, allowing her to tune them up to INSANE sensitivity allowing her to do things like read a book over your shoulder from two blocks away, or to overhear whispered conversations in the next room over (though this obviously also leaves her more vulnerable to sudden bright lights or loud noises). She can also tune them DOWN, so she can shut off her senses if she wants. Useful for ignoring pain, eating spicy food, or tuning out that one song you can't stand.
- Berserker strength. Related to the improved senses. Kohaku doesn't have any more strength than a normal person with her muscle mass, but she CAN briefly surpass her normal limits by shutting off her sense of pain. This gives her a minute or two of seemingly superhuman strength as she ignores all her body's warning signs that she's hurting herself. The cost is that she IS hurting herself, and she usually collapses into a worthless heap for a few days afterwards.
- Symbiotic survival. All hosts have this ability. If Kohaku receives a fatal injury, the symbiote within her will keep her hanging at death's door for LONG after a normal human would succumbed. She'll still be useless during this time, lying on the ground unable to move, and she will EVENTUALLY die, but it takes longer. Basically add like, half an hour, to how long it takes her to bleed to death. Instantly fatal injuries (decapitation, etc) will still kill her just fine.
- Combat training. Not a supernatural ability, per se. Kohaku's sister Ako is possibly the strongest person in her setting, despite being like 15 and not being a host. Ako put her through hell teaching her how to fight, giving Kohaku a solid foundation on hand to hand combat skills, as well as a crippling fear of her own sister.
Others hosts do stuff like breath fire, reverse time, shapeshift, or encase themselves in invulnerable armor. So as symbiotic powers go, Kohaku's are generally considered fairly weak.

AU INFORMATION

AU CHARACTER NAME: Kohaku Yuhara
AGE: 16
GRADE: 10
AU BACKSTORY: - Kohaku had a normal life until her first day of Middle School, where her school was attacked by a powerful daemon that popped out of a portal and started killing people. As per the OU version, 12-year-old Kohaku was trapped under a large chunk of rubble.
- A much smaller daemon that slipped through the portal after the big one found Kohaku and kinda fused into her back, keeping her alive despite her injuries until the big daemon could be found and killed by the multinational hunter organization called Aegis.
- Aegis's speciality was finding and killing this particular kind of daemon, which usually came through into our world along with some of the tiny symbiotic daemons like the one that had found Kohaku. They had many such people in their ranks fused with these tiny, semisentient daemons, and so they knew exactly how to help Kohaku out.
- Kohaku was transferred from her normal middle school to a school owned by Aegis that was shared a campus with a military base. While the Aegis students were mixed, the military cadets they lived with were 99% men. Being one of the very few girls on the campus, Kohaku was actively pursued by lots of her fellows students and grew deeply distrustful of anything that smelled of romance, and also to start low key presenting as male.
- During this time, Kohaku recieved additional training from her battle obsessed little sister.
- Aegis has close ties with Daybreak Academy, including an exchange program, so when Kohaku turned 15 and was old enough to apply she LEAPED on the chance to go to a school that didn't have quite so much testosterone in it.
- That was last year. This is Kohaku's second year at Daybreak Academy.

AU PERSONALITY DEVIATION:

RACE: Human (Contracted)
SECRET SOCIETY: Aegis, a widely spread and powerful hunter organization that specializes in training those contracted to daemons to use their powers against OTHER daemons. The are allies with Daybreak Academy, and occasionally will send younger members to train and study here.

POWERS: Kohaku is sort of a Contracted. She never made any agreemnt with the tiny daemon that is the source of her power. It's barely even self aware. Instead of signing a demonic contract for power, Kohaku actually has a daemon living inside her body. The daemon gave up the ability to live on it's own, but also transformed her body in several ways to make her more powerful.
- Kohaku has superhuman reflexes. When she's focusing, she sees the entire world moving in slow motion, and so it feels to her like she has an extra few seconds to plan out her actions. It creates the illusion of her being faster than normal, and certainly makes her more capable in any kind of dangerous situation.
- Kohaku can adjust the sensitivity of her senses. Turn up her hearing and listen to conversations two rooms away. Turn up her vision and read a book over someone's shoulder from two blocks away. Turn down her sense of taste and eat absurdly spicy food. Etc etc.
- As an addition of the senses thing, Kohaku can gain a sort of berserker strength for a few minutes by just comepletly turning off her sense of pain and pushing her body beyond it's normal limits. Doing so lets her perform insane feats of strength or shrug off horrifying injuries, but usually leaves her in a useless wreck afterwards. Just because you can't feel pain doesn't mean your body isn't getting damaged.
- Kohaku has daemonic toughness. If this were an RPG she'd just have more HP than a normal human, and thus be able to survive hits that would instantly kill or cripple normal humans. She's not invincible, and doesn't heal any faster than anyone else, but she can roll with the punches for a bit longer than she would be able to if she were human
- Kohaku has hardcore combat training. Ako put her through a hellish training regimen that left her with acute combat reflexes you might not expect from someone as young as her, but also left her with a crippling fear of her little sister.
- Kohaku has a sword made from a tusk off the monster that attacked her school. It is white like ivory and significantly lighter and stronger than steel. Katana shaped.

HOUSING: ICly, Kohaku would request to be roomed with another girl. OOCly, no preference.

RP SAMPLE
1. WHAT DO YOU MOST DESIRE FOR YOUR EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE?

2. WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE IN THE FUTURE?
You know I'm not sure? When I was a little kid I always said I was going to be Prime Minister and run the place. Now I'm feeling a little less ambitious. Aegis wants me to be a hunter, obviously but I'd honestly rather do something that lets me be more creative.

4. WHAT IS ESSENTIAL FOR A SCHOOL TO OFFER TO ITS STUDENTS?
An environment where they can really focus on learning without being distracted by unwanted advances from people they're not fuckin' interested in, Tarou Yagami!

...Er...Sorry. That just kind of slipped out. I'll watch my language.

5. WHAT DO YOU FEEL MOST LIMITS YOU FROM ACHIEVING YOUR TRUE POTENTIAL?
The patriarchy. We've all got all these bulls- er, stupid rules we're supposed to follow, y'know? It's stifling everyone from being who the actually want to be when they have to worry about being a Manly Man or a Girly Girl.

6. WHAT COURSE WORK EXCITES YOU? WHY?
Well, it's kinda petty, but that...uh, that THING in there [jerks a thumb at her back] gives me a super sensitive sense of taste. So I'd love to learn how to cook better just so I can stomach my own cooking

7. WHAT COURSE WORK DO YOU DETEST MOST? WHY?
Swimming, I guess? I can swim fine but I don't LIKE it. There is not a single swimsuit that isn't horribly embarrassing.

9. WHEN GIVEN FREE TIME, WHAT DO YOU DO WITH IT?
Is this a trick question where you'll put a red mark on there if I don't say "studying dilligently and helping my community?"

When I REALLY have free time I like to really take advantage of it and totally disengage from my resposibilities. So like, going on a trip somewhere, mindlessly playing videogames, getting absorbed in terrible movies. Stuff like that.

10. WHEN UNDER PRESSURE OF A TIGHT DEADLINE, HOW DO YOU RESPOND?
Buckle down and work my ass off. If other people are involved, ride their asses until they also buckle down. I can be pretty bossy when I need to be.

11. WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM YOUR PEERS?
To treat me and each other with at least baseline dignity as a human being. Or..you know. Whatever species they happen to be. I can't assume that at this school, can I?

But just, like, don't make it weird. That's all I ask. Don't make it weird.

12. WHEN WORKING IN A GROUP, HOW DO YOU ORGANIZE TO ACHIEVE YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL?
I've found that most people's default state is not wanting to work. The trick to being a good leader is figuring out what each person you're leading likes even more than not working, and using that to motivate them. If that doesn't work, yelling at people usually gets results, at least in the short term.

13. DO YOU FEEL YOU CAN RELY ON YOUR PEERS, OR DO YOU FEEL YOU MUST EXCEL ON YOUR OWN?
I'm more worried about if my peers can rely on me. Being contracted is pretty neat but a good mage can do so much more than I can, as can a lot of candles, or hell even some hunters with no powers at all.

15. WHAT ABOUT THE FUTURE DO YOU FEAR THE MOST?
I mean, Nightfall feels like the obvious fear. End of the world and all that sh- junk.

Something a bit more personal? I hate the idea of growing up and getting married and popping out babies.

character information
name: Kohaku Yuhara
canon: Aegis Monster Hunter Academy (Original Canon)
canon point: About four months into the school year, JUST before everything starts to go totally crazy in her life.
age: 16

(original) world: Back in the 1980s, we drilled too deep, looking for oil and other resources. We found an enormous ecosystem full of monstrous alien creatures that seemed to want nothing more than to wipe out all humans. We ALSO found friendlier monsters that would attach themselves to human hosts and give them strange powers allowing them to actually fight back against the more hostile monsters.

Skip ahead to 2015. Kohaku Yuhara's family is caught in a monster attack. Her father's legs were paralyzed, and Kohaku herself would have died had there not been a symbiote wandering around, looking for a human. They prefer humans on the edge of puberty, so Kohaku was a perfect choice. The symbiote burrowed into her spine and kept her alive at the brink of death until the military was able to defeat the beast. She went on to Jr. High at an otherwise all boys school for complicated reasons involving scheduling and scholarships and whatnot. Listen, don't think about it too hard. There's more than enough shows about one guy going to an all girls school. This was when she picked up the habit of presenting as male for convenience.

Skip ahead to 2018 (Which was the near future when I wrote this). Kohaku starts her time at Aegis Monster Hunter Academy, the oldest and among the most prestigious schools in the world dedicated to training Hosts. She was all ready to have a fulfilling and quiet scholastic experience, but any chances of that went up in flames when she ran into Toyo Seiryu. Toyo was the Student Council President at the time, as well as the strongest fighter in the school, known by the student body as "The Dragon". She was also very, very lazy. When she ran into Kohaku, she saw an opportunity. She faked outrage over some minor slight and challenged Kohaku to a duel. Bewildered, Kohaku accidentally accepted. Kohaku didn't realize until Toyo threw the match and lost that the winner would become the new Student Council President. Toyo got to foist a huge pile of responsibilities onto Kohaku's skinny shoulders and live her life of ease. Kohaku, being the serious and responsible sort, did her best to deal with the eccentric personalities of the student council.

As if that wasn't enough, she started noticing something strange going on among the school's faculty. There seemed to be secret, cut off sections of the school no one could get into save for a few teachers. Students were disappearing. SOMETHING was up, and Kohaku didn't have anyone to rely on but her own weird group of friends to figure out what!

Name: Kohaku Yuhara
Gender: Female I guess if you really want to put a label on it? Use whatever pronouns you want.
Age: 16

General physical description
Ethnically Japanese, dark shoulder length hair, around 5'8", athletic build. Could pass for a boyish girl or a girly boy. Large scars running along her spine. Frequently has bags under her eyes.

Backstory (short version)
In the near future, monsters from deep caves attack humans on the surface. Some humans form symbiotic relationships with other monsters to gain super powers and fight them.

Kohaku has a symbiote, so she goes to a special school for training monster hunters. She got tricked into taking the job of Student Council President despite being young for the job, and would probably have about 5 girls trying to date her if she was a boy AND if she wasn't utterly uninterested in that kind of thing right now. She's too busy trying to balance studying for class with running the Student Council and uncovering sinister conspiracies.

Personality keywords
Sarcastic, self deprecating, aware of memes, responsible, traumatized

Abilities
The symbiotic creature she is bound to burrowed into her body and replaced most of her nervous system. This grants her superhuman reflexes, the ability to supercharge her senses, and the ability to deaden her sense of pain and push her body far past when it should collapse in agony or exhaustion. It also will keep her alive through injuries that would kill normal humans, though it won't make her any more able to function at that point. It takes excessive force to actually finish off hosts.
